The business coaching industry is unregulated. You can search for coaches on the web, and you’ll see endless options. Likewise, anyone can pretty much call themselves a coach.

This is when you start assessing yourself. Do you have what it takes to be a business coach?

Here are three questions to ask yourself:

Do I really want to help other people reach their goals?

If you stop to think about it, being qualified for something is more than just having the correct skill set or experience. It begins with your personal attributes. You need to be emotionally and mentally prepared to assist others. To sum it up, you must:

  • Explore, clarify, and match what someone wants to achieve
  • Allow others to explore and find new things about themselves
  • Assist in the development of customised solutions and tactics.
  • Keep a client in line and accountable.

Do I possess coaching skills and knowledge?

You may move from entrepreneurship to coaching if you’ve established a company. However, if you want to succeed, you’ll need to understand how to set up your coaching business, identify your niche, promote yourself, build relationships, create successful programs, and apply techniques for expanding a potential client’s business.

Is there anything else I can do aside from coaching?

You might envision spending only an hour or two a day coaching a small business owner, but that’s not all there is to this profession. In actuality, according to the ICF, coaching is just one revenue stream that produces 13% of your profit. Thus, whether you realise it or not, other areas of your business will need focus in order for it to grow and become profitable:

I often get asked if someone needs a degree to become a business coach. The answer is no; though, of course, it would help boost your credibility sky-high. If you want to be taken seriously as a business coach, I cannot recommend enough that you seek out credentials from an accredited organisation like the International Coaching Federation. An ICF study found that 83% of clients see these accredited credentials as vital when choosing a coach–a statistic which has driven 77% of coaches seeking certification themselves.

So, you can become ICF-certified like many successful coaches, but it is not necessary to have this title. You can also receive coach training and mentoring from a certified coach or take up leadership courses and programs. By doing any of these things, you will develop the skills needed to build a prosperous coaching career.


Coaching is a business, not a nine-to-five job or corporate profession. In addition to your passion and skill set for coaching, it’s essential that you understand how to start, run, and manage your coaching business.

Here are my tips on how to become a successful business coach.


When you’re starting your business coaching practice, one of the first decisions you have to make is what kind of entity to form. You have two basic options:

  • Sole proprietorship: You can start a business as an unincorporated entity.
  • Limited liability company (LLC): You will need to register your business as a limited liability company in order to protect all members from being held liable.
Now what should you choose between the two? Here are a few things that you should consider:
  • Costs: Because you must register your business as an LLC, you’ll have to spend more up front. You’ll also have to pay for initial registration and annual maintenance fees. A sole proprietorship, on the other hand, requires little investment.
  • Regulations: Some LLCs are more regulated than sole proprietorships. If you choose the former, you may need an operating agreement depending on where your business is based.
  • Taxes: As a sole proprietor, you file taxes as self-employed, whereas an LLC has you follow corporate tax structures.
  • Liability: Compared to a sole proprietor, an LLC has corporate liability protection. This means that the company is held accountable for debts and liabilities instead of the individual members. However, if personal funds are commingled with LLC funds, this limited liability protection may be lost.

Keep in mind your business objectives and where you want to go. Don’t be afraid to seek advice from experienced professionals if you need it. As a business coach, choosing the proper sort of company entity is crucial. An LLC provides benefits and protection that are worth considering in comparison with a sole proprietorship, which offers flexibility and low costs. It is entirely up to you whether or not to do so.


Let me tell you a little about how I got here. I was a college dropout who tried to pursue a job in information technology. It worked for a year until I quit my corporate job and began my own firm.

I made the mistake of not heeding my business coach’s advice to become a skilled marketer, and as a result, I wasted money on ads without seeing any ROI. You’ll need a marketing strategy if you want to succeed as a business coach. It doesn’t matter how excellent you are at assisting individuals if you can’t get clients initially. Your marketing plan might help you identify the correct people and whatever it takes to attract them to your coaching service.

There are several platforms that may help you expand your coaching business, but I strongly advise you to join social media sites. You can’t always count on marketing methods to attract new customers. Extend your reach and people will come to you; there are a lot of ways to do so.

If you’re looking to connect with CEOs and other high-powered executives, LinkedIn is the place for you. However, if your aim is to work with smaller businesses, it would behove you to focus your attention on Facebook and Instagram instead.

Here are a few business coaching tips to expand your network:

  • Whatever platform you’re using, optimise your business coach profile: Add a photo, your identity, and details about your coaching program.
  • Participate in conversations: Establish yourself as an expert in your field by sharing your knowledge and expertise.
  • Join relevant groups on LinkedIn and Facebook: Connect with entrepreneurs, professionals, and people in the coaching industry.
  • Connect with other business coaches too!: You could just get clients from referrals, and word-of-mouth marketing. And requesting a referral need not be anxiety-provoking. Take a look at these top referral recommendations.
  • Build a content strategy. The key here is to post content that’s attractive and valuable to your target audience. If possible, you can also share content from other business coaches.

This includes finding new customers, figuring out how best to coach them, possessing the right skillset and toolsets needed to bring about positive change in their lives.
